More radial roads to Hyderabad ORR to be expanded soon

Published & Updated as on - 2010-10-24

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Urban Development Authority (HMDA) will expand three more radial roads for better connectivity to Outer Ring Roads (ORR) in the city.

These three new radial roads are Gandimysamma-Dundigal road (Hyderabad to Bodhan road), Tarnaka to Keesara and Nagole junction to Gowrelli road. Works on these roads will be taken up with the funds being provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), sources said.

In all, HMDA proposes to develop 33 radial roads mainly to connect ORR from the inner ring roads. These roads were identified after a traffic study, which recommended that these roads need to be widened and developed in order to ensure hassle-free travel to reach ORR.

Based on traffic movement, the roads are being widened to four lane, six lane and eight lane. The road development plans include widening, construction of footpaths, central median with lighting and beautification works.

In the first phase, the urban development authority had already taken up six radial roads last year. JICA has released Rs 380 crore loan for development of these radial roads.

The six roads include Radial Road (RR) No 33, which is from Indian School of Business to Gachibowli ORR. The six-lane road works were already completed last year. Another radial road, RR No 2 from Agriculture university at Rajendranagar to APRL and from Lunger Houz to Vikarabad (RR No 3) works too were almost completed. A four-lane road (RR No 4) from Tippu Khan bridge to Gandipet (Narsingi) except some structures 90 per cent of the work was completed by the Roads and Buildings department.

RR from Byramalguda junction towards Nagarjuna Sagar road (RR No 25) with six lanes was completed and a road from Pahadisharief to Tukkuguda (RR No 28), Srisailam road, has been taken up recently and will be completed by next year.

"JICA funds were utilised for four radial roads of the total six roads taken up by HMDA which comes to about Rs 240 crore of the total Rs 380 crore. The balance Rs 140 crore will be used for the new three radial roads being taken up soon,"ORR chief general manager (tech) G Jagannadha Rao said.

Sources said for taking up all the 33 radial roads at a stretch, the HMDA requires Rs 2,500 crore. Of the total amount, Rs 750 crore for land acquisition for road widening works. Since the HMDA is in a financial crisis only important roads were taken up.

For the development of radial roads, Huda bears 30 per cent of the cost, while R & B and Municipal administration and Urban Development departments contribute 25 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Source: TOI 23/10/10
