India’s First Water Theme Based IT Park Gets SEZ Status

Published & Updated as on - 2010-01-08

The Centre has notified the 33 acres of land identified for the Infopark at Ambalappuzha as a Special Economic Zone. IT Secretary Ajay Kumar said the decision was taken at a meeting of the Board of Approvals for SEZ of the Union Ministry of Commerce in New Delhi.

“The Infopark will be developed as the first ‘water-theme-based’ IT Park in India with immense untapped potential for promoting IT and knowledge services in this land of backwaters. With this park, we aim to create an ambience that is extremely conducive for professionals to work in a stress-free environment,” said Ajay Kumar.

Infopark Ambalappuzha, located on the National Highway 47, 22 km from Alappuzha town, will be developed in around 100 acres of prime property at Smrithivanam at Purakkad village. It was in 2008 that the Centre had given in-principle approval for the 33 acres, Infopark CEO Siddhartha Bhattacharya said.

The work on the Infopark began in April 2009 and the first phase of the infrastructure work is expected to be completed by this June. With the completion of the first building by April 2011, there will be provision to employ over 1,000 IT/ITES professionals. “The basic infrastructure, which will be developed in phase-1, includes power receiving and distribution facility, potable water through RO plant, access roads, land reclamation and development, drains and a boat jetty. We’ve sought to develop the park through partnership and the investment in the first three years is about Rs 150 crore,” he added.
